Fabian
Chapter One: Ruins
The doe contently chewed on a boxwood bush, not aware of any sign of danger. Fabian crouched low behind a large oak tree, staring intently at the calm doe. This would be perfect food for Dakota and him, enough for a few months at least. Quickly Fabian thought of the best way to kill the doe. Then everything clicked. He would shoot her with a bow and arrow. Hastily he swung an old bow of his back. Treating it delicately he laid it on the soft pile of leaves. He gazed fascinated at the designs on the side of the bow, it was carved into four sections .The first was a war scenery Many soldiers lay dead, most helmets and armor blue, others red, but more red men were standing. There was no blue besides the dead, Fabian knew that a big war had left red in victory. Fabian had never ever seen this bow before today when he found it at the ruins of an old castle. Fabian stared hard at the design; it was carved very detailed, like the leaves on the ground or the blood on the soldier’s armor and shields. There was more too, in the back ground of the war scene was a castle, not only a castle a familiar castle.
He wondered.
Was it possible?
He didn’t know; he weighed the options and the consequences. He knew he should not let him and his brother go hungry, for a silly wondering-what a selfish question to dare ask himself! Then suddenly he heard a loud BOOM-a gun. He lifted his head up a tiny bit, and then he saw the doe collapse. A tall man with dark black hair, slicked back by oil, wearing fairly to fancy clothes for his dirty body, stepped out from behind the boxwood bush. He laughed, but it was more of a croaking. He wondered why someone was out this far in Merlifor woods. No one in Ferran Cove would go in this deep, because there was a story of Sami Deviv. He was three years old when he went in, but he never came out. Some people say he was eaten by a bear. Others say he died of hunger or thirst. Truthfully no one knows what happened to Sami Deviv. Fabian pushed the story of Sami out of his mind and thought about the person. Then it struck him-the man was a straggler. There were many here. They usually only come deep to get food, but if anyone is there, they will steal EVERYTHING from the clothes on your back to the dirt out of your pockets. Carefully but swiftly Fabian swung his bow on his shoulder and started creeping deeper in the woods. If he ran now, the man would probably catch Fabian, but if he crept away silently he might have a chance of escape. Fabian dodged sticks and old leaves on the forest floor to make sure his footfalls were dead silent. Then out of nowhere Fabian felt two small teeth sink into his bare foot. He cried out in agony, he looked down, a snake. Then he heard fast heavy footfalls behind him. He bolted across the ground, running with all his might and will. He pushed as hard as he could, even though the harder the push, the more the venom would affect him. Fabian didn’t think about the venom though he thought about where he was going to go. There was one place, the shack - his and Dakota’s house, but it was in the opposite direction. He could try to turn around and dodge the man. If he did escape, the man might follow him figuring out where everything of theirs was. Should he give up? No. He needed to think. THE RUINS! He almost yelled in delight, but shut his mouth in just enough time. It took him a few minutes to reach the ruins, as he neared them he started feeling dizzy. He tried to shake off the feeling that he was going to be sick. He came around the back of the castle ruins which took him a while. He carefully removed some heavy bricks from their place. He had 8 bricks, and a good size space. He sat down and smartly placed the bricks around him, making a small fort. He needed four more, so he turned around and lifted 4 bricks out of their place. After he had set them in his neat formation He pressed against a short intact wall. He had removed four bricks out of the wall which had revealed a small hole. A large metal plate was set firmly on the ground of the hole. It looked like a slide. Curiously Fabian lifted the top 4 bricks out of their place and set them on the ground behind him. He stared into the dark hole wondering what lay at the bottom. Then he heard something-footfalls, two of them. The straggler and a friend, wait was it Dakota or another straggler. Then the footsteps slowed to a stop.
Then a strong clear voice spoke, “He is around here somewhere. Around the back, come on Trodon.
“Ramon are you sure he is rich?”
“Yes, Trodon, he hasn’t been lost very long though, has a lot of stuff, saw a bow on his back-probably 70 dollars on the market.”
“70?”
“Yes, now go and look around the back, while I rummage through the rubble up here.”
“Okay.”
Fabian knew he had one choice. One means of escape, a very dangerous path. He was still very nocuous and if he hit his head he would probably die. Then he heard footsteps getting closer and closer. He put his legs into the slide and down he went. Fabian couldn’t see a thing, but he could feel. There were spiders and rats, other things that crawled upon Fabian. He shuddered but didn’t fight them. Then a burst of light filled the tunnel. That’s when Fabian saw it, a ginormous rat. Twenty pounds at least, it was fighting with its fat trying to keep up. Then the rat turned its face to look at Fabian, red eyes sparkling in the light. Fabian turned his head and hit the wall of the slide. Before he passed out his last thought was, the tunnel is thinning I am going to die.
